  School to Work

"... even if it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go on out and sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures; sweep streets like Handel and Beethoven composed music; sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry; sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, "Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well."
If you can't be a pine on the top of a hill
Be a scrub in the valley—but be
The best little scrub on the side of the hill,
Be a bush if you can't be a tree.
If you can't be a highway just be a trail
If you can't be the sun be a star;
It isn't by size that you win or fail—
Be the best of whatever you are."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Section 1:  Who am I and Where am I going?

In this first section you will be exposed to a variety of tools to help you figure out where you want to go after high school. You will be given the opportunity to identify those things in life that are important to you. You will also be taking a couple of different inventories. The first one is a personality inventory and the second one is an interest inventory. Both of these will give you insight about whom you are and potential careers that you may want to consider. We will discuss the differences between a want and a need, as well as the importance of having goals.

Students will be able to:

  1. Identify their values and describe how they affect their career choices.
  2. Identify their temperaments based on a personality inventory
  3. Discover potential career choices through an interest inventory.
  4. Explain the influences of wants and values
  5. Distinguish the difference between short and long term goals
  6. Write goals for themselves

Let's Get Busy!So lets get busy!!!

Topic 1.1:  Values

You make a variety of decisions from the time you get out of bed in the morning to the time you go to sleep. Everyday you are faced with many choices and possibilities. You get to decide how you spend your money and time. You choose whether to go to the mall or study for that big test. You make choices about who will be your friend and what classes to take in school. Almost everything you do requires a decision of some kind.

A decision is a choice you make from two or more possibilities. Learning to make a decision is a very important part of becoming an adult. There are many influences on the choices that we make. One of the major influences is called values.

Values:  something that is important to you.

You may have never given much thought to the word values or to what your own values are. Everyone has values. Values affect the goals you set and the choices you make. A value can be a thing, a relationship, or a belief.
