Course Overview:

Music is, in one way or the other, a part of everyone’s life. This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of Music. This course explains concepts and vocabulary, discusses the genres and styles from various artists, cultures and times, and examines the level of participation from the audience. Students are encouraged to use music to express and present ideas and feelings, and to communicate using music for specific purposes. Students will be required to write musical notation, save the file, and upload the file to the course assignment drop box. Students will also be required to produce a music composition using an instrument of choice (may be as simple as a recorder or as complex as a piano) or an electronic composition application that is available as a computer app (for example: Musescore.org and Crescendo Music Notation Software which can be used on different platforms including a Mac or a PC) or a mobile app (for example: students may also use GarageBand which is an application found on mobile phones).

Note: This course is not designed for ELL (English Language Learners) students. ELL students may enroll in this course ONLY if they have adequate mentor support at their home school and are able to fulfill all course requirements.

Requirements:

  • Any instrument of choice (e.g. piano, violin etc.) or alternatives as provided below:
  • a recorder OR
  • an electronic composition application that is available as a computer app (for example:

Musescore.org and Crescendo Music Notation Software which can be used on different platforms including a Mac or a PC) OR

  • a mobile app (for example: students may also use GarageBand which is an application found on mobile phones). 

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  • understand and apply music concepts and vocabulary
  • develop music skills and techniques
  • understand and apply music genres and styles from various artists, cultures and times
  • understand and apply audience conventions in a variety of arts settings and performances for music
  • apply a creative process in music (identify, explore, gather, interpret, use, implement, reflect, refine, and present)
  • apply a performance process in music (identify, select, analyze, interpret, rehearse, adjust, refine, present, produce, reflect and self evaluate)
  • apply a responding process to a music presentation (engage, describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate)
  • use music to express and present ideas and feelings
  • use music to communicate for a specific purpose
  • develop personal aesthetic criteria to communicate artistic choices in music
  • demonstrate and analyze the connections among the arts disciplines
  • demonstrate and analyze the connections among the arts and other content areas
  • understand how the arts impact and reflect lifelong choices
  • understand how the arts influence and reflect cultures/civilization, place and time
  • understand how arts knowledge and skills are used in the world of work, including careers in the arts
